Exit Stage Left: Recalibrate Your Heart

Dave Clark of FellowshipChurch, Grapevine, Texas, encourages those behind the scenes to remember the why of what they do

Dave Clark is currently serving at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, TX as a director on the creative team. Prior to moving to Texas, he served at National Community Church in Washington, DC for five years as Media Pastor and Campus Pastor. He enjoys all things tech, sports and loves spending spending time with his wife Jenn and their two kids. He can be reached through his blog at http://daveclark.com.

So often, many of us who work in the technical arts and media side of the church can become hyper-focused on exactly what's in front of us. We become enthralled with our to-do list, our calendar and projects. This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. But my fear is that those of us behind-the-scenes sometimes forget the "why" of why we do what we do on a weekly basis.

Have the other departments in the church that your media team serves become more like ‘clients' then actual ministries? Is the crew talking more about the latest gear that's coming out than they are about the lives being impacted each week? How is the overall vibe in your office space? Do people like to hang out or do they avoid it like the plague?

May I suggest that one of the best things you and the people in your media ministry can do is step out from behind the control boards and computer monitors, wrap a towel around your waist and serve. Get out and serve others together! Go and serve the homeless community at a soup kitchen, play with some needy and lonely kids, or go serve the elderly. Go and be the hands and feet of Jesus to someone who needs to know Him personally and share Christ's love.

After serving you will remember, your job ultimately is for those who need to experience the love of Jesus Christ. Then you will know why you do what you do. Creating that video that tells a story of a life changed. Perfecting the audio mix so the message can come across clearly. Creating a worship environment where people won't be distracted and where they can have an experience with God. So that even more people can be empowered to go out to live and serve like Christ.

It's important for us to celebrate within our media and tech ministries each week, the lives that are impacted during our services each weekend. Celebrate and thank God for the small part that we might have played in that process. My prayer for all of us today is that God would break our hearts for those who need him. And in turn we would use that to fuel our hearts for our ministries.
