High-Powered Speakers Debut at WFX
— and some of the hottest speakers are loud, edgy and human

As it turns out, some of the coolest loudspeakers showing up at the Worship Facilities Conference and Expo 2006 (WFX), November 8–10, 2006, at the Dallas Convention Center won’t necessarily be electro-mechanical. Instead, they’ll be tech directors from all across the country — and peers who come to share their knowledge in forums with Q&A sessions.

Nicole Derany, show director for WFX in Framingham, Massachusetts, reports that the track of courses geared toward Church Production Magazine readers includes 22 invaluable programs. “Tech directors, media ministers, operators and volunteers can attend the Church Production track of classes as a team to learn how to produce cutting-edge services that help keep the membership engaged,” she says. “[Attendees will] meet experienced tech teams from churches around the country and visit top audio, video and lighting manufacturers and integrators [at their exhibits and in educational forums].”

Some select classes that tech team members will find at WFX include “Overcoming the Challenges of Technology in a Multi-Venue/Multi-Site Church” by presenter Dennis Choy. Choy is the technical production pastor with North Coast Church in Vista, California, a pioneering church of the video venue concept. In this seminar, Choy will teach attendees how to build the necessary volunteer team, pick the right equipment and make the production run smoothly.

Of the Q&A portion of this year’s WFX educational seminars, church media consultant, advisory board member and presenter Anthony Coppedge, says:

“I’m eagerly aNtICIpatINg the INCreaseD Q&a tIme so that atteNDees wIll have eveN more ‘take-home’ INformatIoN that they CaN apply the very Next suNDay.”

PicturesYet another great seminar at this year’s WFX is “Can You Hear Me Now? Tools & Techniques to Provide a Clear and Immersive Audio Experience,” a panel discussion with Matt Salerno, technical sales support representative at Meyer Sound Laboratories Inc. in Berkeley, California. Other panelists include Meyer Sound’s Gavin Canaan, educational programs manager, and Steve Ellison, Meyer Sound’s director of LCS series products, as well as Jerrold Stevens, Dallas-based PMK Consultants LLC’s project manager and senior consultant. Attendees will learn how surround sound and acoustic enhancement systems can heighten the shared worship experience, as well as discuss how to overcome acoustical challenges in common architectural designs for houses of worship.

KeynoteAlong with its 22 superb, technology-focused educational seminars, WFX will feature a Church Production facilities tour of Fellowship Bible Church in uptown Dallas. The church holds contemporary services in a newly renovated 125,000-square-foot facility that uses top-quality production equipment. A team of staff and volunteers will talk about how they use production tools to create intimacy in the 1,100-seat auditorium on a limited budget.

WFX will also feature the House of Worship Awards Program, where churches across the country are recognized for excellence in facilities growth and in technical production. Award categories include best design, best implementation and operation of a church audio-visual system, best tech director, best technical production team, and others.
