Church in the Digital World at WFX

If you are making plans to be in Charlotte in two weeks, come explore Church in the Digital World live.

Posted 10/15/2009

If you happen to be at WFX on Wednesday, October 28th at 2pm, make plans to be at the Church in the Digital World workshop.

As I'm working on the session I find myself with an interesting dillemma.  Chances are the attendees in the room really will be all over the map.  Digital world natives and digital world immigrants. People who tweet every hour and people who still aren't quite comfortable with Facebook.

The thing is, no matter where we fall on the technology continuum, there are some challenges we all face that have nothing to do with particular technologies.  We all live in a world that is changing. And while it would be nice if everything shifted at a nice even rate, the reality is that parts of culture are zooming ahead and other parts are lagging behind.  And all of us find ourselves navigating this discontinutiy in almost every area of our lives.

I was speaking with Phill Martin this week who is head of education for NACBA (National Association of Church Business Administrators).  Phill reminded me of a time when business used to be cyclical.  Times of intense productivity followed by gaps where there was time to catch your breath and put energy into non-urgent tasking.  However most of us--because of the accessibility created by the digital world--now work 24/7.  The engine is always on high.  Even on vacation it is difficult to unplug.

Moreover, the digital world is blurring our professional and personal lives. Social networks create clouds of friends, family, co-workers, clients...  People I work with now know if I make a late night run with my husband for bubble tea.  I know the names of the dogs of associates who work in other cities.

All of this rapid change is both exciting and scary. It creates conflict. It creates possibility.

The good news is none of us are walking this digital world by ourselves.

And for those of you at WFX, I can't wait to meet you!
