Calvary Baptist Church, Canton, Mich. Solves Audio Challenges

Calvary Baptist Church in Canton, Michigan is an 800-member congregation that focuses on contemporary and modern worship while striving to maintain its rich heritage of the past. The church programs encourage young children to learn about their faith, youth groups help teens through the challenging years, and there are a variety of classes and groups for adults as well. Four rotating bands consisting of guitars, keyboards, drums, percussion, wind and string instruments, and vocals utilizing music that is relevant today accompany Sunday services.

The church has been at its current location since 1968, and in 1988, the existing loudspeaker and amplifiers were installed with an analog console added ten years later. "We were experiencing constant feedback problems with our old system," states Aaron Welch, Pastor of Worship Arts. "There wasn't a Sunday that didn't go by without some kind of squealing or ringing."

The auditorium was not designed for the type of programs the church offers today. The main structural challenge was that of electrical power and adequate room required in the snake for lines to run up to the stage. So, when Calvary Baptist Church reached out to Thunder Audio Group of Taylor, Michigan to find a solution, the challenge would be for Thunder to find lines that were usable and power that was accessible.

The church also wanted an audio console that would recall settings from each band and work in tandem with an Aviom in-ear monitoring system that they desired. "Our decision to go digital was based on our need for flexibility, memory and expandability," says Welch. "Our musical style has evolved quite a bit from the 1980s and 1990s where we were mainly a traditional worship setting⎯piano, organ, and choir. Today, we utilize a rhythm section, horns, and lead vocals. We also have several bands that rotate throughout the month."

"The new sound system recommendation we presented to Calvary Baptist was a no brainer," states Paul Owen, Vice President of Thunder Audio Group. "Yamaha Commercial Audio's complete system solution approach enabled us to not only meet the church's criteria, but to stay within their budget. The Church is a very unusual shape⎯the auditorium is semi circle, and the stage is rectangular, so there are points on the stage that put the artist in front and under the PA," notes Owen. "The NEXO GEO S was a wonderful choice due to its very high rejection of feedback in these circumstances. Cosmetically, the system was able to be pulled quite high into the roof and still give amazing coverage with out loosing any SPL."

Owen and crew installed nine Nexo GEO S 805 line array speakers, six GEO S830s, an NX242 processor, three Yamaha PC9501n amplifiers and a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital audio console. "The new Nexo GEO line array system is superb, the ease of use of the M7CL, and the high-quality sound have brought our services to a whole new level," says Welch.

The church is a very unusual shape. The auditorium is semi-circle, and the stage is rectangular, so there are points on the stage that put the artist in front and under the PA.

The GEO S805 has consistently demonstrated a remarkable ability to project coherent sound over long distances. The GEO S830 has proven the value and effectiveness of both vertical and horizontal tangent arrays. Calvary Baptist Church chose a white cabinet system to blend with their ceiling. "We are achieving coverage right down to the first few rows without any additional front fill; this was pre-determined by using the Nexo GEO Software room measuring program," adds Owen.

The Yamaha M7CL with its CentraLogic interface takes the most direct approach to providing maximum ease of use and efficiency. A touch-panel display combined with Yamaha's selected channel concept and straightforward navigation system enables instant operation. Owen personally trained the volunteer audio engineers on the M7CL and continues to support them with various techniques like gates and mixing an acoustic drum kit. "Our volunteer sound technicians have absolutely loved the flexibility and power of the Yamaha M7CL. We couldn't do what we do today without it." An ADAT slot in the back of the M7CL is used for the church's Aviom personal listening monitor system so musicians now have individual control of their own situations, increasing the musicality of the bands. 12 AudioTechnica wireless mic systems are also used.

Calvary Baptist utilizes an Alesis HD24 24-track digital recorder for the recording of special concerts and worship albums. They typically do a live video and audio mix of regular worship services and have a 15-member volunteer video team that record each Sunday to DVD using a Videonics MXProDV four-channel video mixer along with two Canon XL1 and two Sony DVCam video cameras.

"Our congregation was floored the first Sunday we ran with the new sound system. The clarity of sound and room dynamics is unmatched from what we previously had; it's like going from Fred Flintstone to James Bond."

Adaptive Technologies Expands Production Capacity
In a time when so many companies are cutting back or shutting down altogether, Adaptive Technologies Group, parent to Allen Products and ATM Fly-Ware, is growing.

Adaptive recently acquired a manufacturing facility in La Verne, Calif. to further expand its production capabilities and reduce its lead times. "With so many major venues on the books it was time for us to expand our capacity and this is the perfect economic climate to do so" says Paul Allen, CEO of the Adaptive companies.

"Production of both our standard and custom designs will benefit tremendously and investing in today's technology makes it so much easier. Our design team in Signal Hill, Calif. can now create products and entire structures in CAD and send them straight to machines in La Verne and start manufacturing instantly" says Allen.

This additional facility will also allow Adaptive to rapidly expand its product lines, such as the growing FasPac Series, a system that places multiple loudspeakers into rigid planar arrays for rigging, and HoverPro, a flying display system for single and multiple LCD and plasma screens.

Since bid and order activity is back on the upswing for Adaptive, many new products and projects are being planned and this recent acquisition is just in time to meet the needs of our re-emerging industry.

01. Elation Makes LED Moving Head Technology More Accessible With New Design Wash LED Pro
Elation Elation Professional is bringing the smooth RGB color mixing, fast speed and low maintenance of an LED-powered moving head to more lighting designers and users — even those on slim budgets. The company has introduced the Design Wash LED Pro, a high-output DMX-compatible LED moving head color wash with all the features today's designers are demanding — including a "street price" of under $3,500!

Although compact and very affordable, the Design Wash LED Pro is incredibly bright, powered by 108 high-output three-watt Rebel LEDs (52 red, 22 green, 22 blue and 12 white). Its LEDs can be blended to create a palette of millions of colors through additive RGB mixing using a DMX controller. The addition of white LEDs to the usual RGB mix is an extra-value feature that allows the Design Wash LED Pro to produce more vibrant colors and pastels, and also makes it an ideal fixture for designers who want to create a true white.

Featuring three-phase motors, this fully automated moving head can pan at either 630° or 530° and tilt 265°. And with an expansive beam angle of 39.5°, it gives you a wide, even, smooth wash, unlike some LED products that can only muster a narrow beam at 20-foot applications.

"LED moving heads are starting to have a real impact on our industry — even smaller lighting users are becoming interested in this technology," says Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. "They've seen the amazing advantages that LED-powered moving yoke fixtures offer over conventional discharge units, such as lighter weight, compact size, faster speed, energy efficiency and low maintenance, while delivering extreme brightness and precise RGB+W color control."

Ideal for theaters, concerts, churches, events, productions, rentals or any interior color washing application, the Design Wash LED Pro has an extremely compact, lightweight design. Thanks in large part to its low weight — just 20.6 lbs. — it can pan and tilt with lightning speed. Its compact size (17.2"''x 13" x 8.6") also makes it easy to transport and requires less space on the truck.

The Design Wash LED Pro can even go places where DMX cables can't be run, thanks to a built-in Elation EWDMX wireless receiver. It can receive wireless DMX signals up to 3,000 feet sent by Elation's EWDMXT wireless DMX transmitter (sold separately) or from other wireless DMX transmitters made by Wireless Solution Sweden AB.

Thanks to its low power requirements, the Design Wash LED Pro is extremely energy efficient, producing 4,950 lux at three meters, while consuming just 360 watts of electricity at full power. It's low on maintenance requirements too — its LEDs are rated at 50,000 hours, which is 13 years at 10-hours-a-day use 7 days a week.

The Design Wash LED Pro operates on 13 DMX channels and includes a digital LCD menu for easy operation. It features fan-cooling with Auto or DMX fan control options, and includes a multi-voltage 98V-240V internal power supply.

02. Martin Audio debuts ASX Powered 21-inch Installation Subwoofer
Martin Audio The new ASX floor-mounted active installation subwoofer from Martin Audio is fully capable of producing the highest SPL ever from a single low-frequency enclosure housing a single-drive unit.

The massive ASX enclosure—(W) 46.85 in x (H) 23.62 in x (D) 46.85 in —houses a patented 21-inch transducer, Class D amplifier with 8.5 kW peak power, and full DSP, revolutionizing ultra-efficient, low-frequency sound reproduction.

Combining the transducer, amplifier and DSP doubles the output capability of a conventionally driven loudspeaker driver of the same size. When incorporated into a Martin Audio Hybrid horn design, the complete system can deliver an unsurpassed 152 dB peak output (measured) from a single enclosure. This is typically greater than what can be achieved by two 2 x 18-inch conventionally driven, reflex subwoofers.

In addition, Martin Audio's adaptive control loop technology maintains linearity up to the maximum output level and power compression is virtually eliminated. Designed for premium club installations, stadiums (and for special effects in theme parks) the dynamic, low distortion sonic signature of the ASX at full power has to be experienced to be believed.

Key features include a Hybrid large folded horn and ported design (-3 dB @ 30 Hz); a single 21-inch (530mm)/6-inch (150mm) voice coil driver with 2.4-inch (60mm) peak-to-peak excursion; a switched mode power supply with PFC (Power Factor Correction) and global mains voltage operation; on-board DSP providing delay, EQ and filtering as well as amplifier and driver excursion limiting, and a PC-based software application for parameter configuration.
