Contemporary Music Reflects Well in Renovation

The 30-years-young Catholic Church of St. Ann in Marietta, Georgia recently completed a $5 million architecture, audio and video renovation. A new 4,400-square-foot Narthex or gathering space and the Nave or worship area were all updated, since their original dedication in 1981.

Having embraced contemporary Christian music, with a full band as the core of its music ministry, the acoustical challenges of new, hard surfaces were met with Renkus-Heinz ICONYX IC32 digitally steerable array loudspeakers, custom colored to match the architecture, a Roland V-Mix console and Biamp Nexia processors, with Creston control panels. The band uses Hear Technologies HearBack personal monitoring mixing systems.

A marble sanctuary, tile floors and new radius-designed wooden pews, while visually stunning, presented drastically altered acoustics and a challenge to intelligibility and the quality of music.

Reverberation times (RT) of 1.4 to 1.5 seconds mid-band rose to 2.4 to 2.5 seconds after the refurbishment, says D. Wayne Lee, P. E. of A/V consultants Lee Sound Design, Atlanta, Ga., as the firm had predicted following its modelling of the renovated sanctuary in EASE 4.1 and 4.2 with AURA. He adds: "We spent considerable time educating the client about the subjective impact of the planned acoustical changes on both sound system performance and the environmental noise levels that would accompany normal activity."

The Church of St. Ann has embraced contemporary Christian music, with a full band as the core of its music ministry. The existing sound system, with Renkus-Heinz TRAP 40 loudspeakers in a tight array and with TRX61 under balcony loudspeakers and dual-18-inch subwoofers, had served it well; but the new space demanded a smaller visual loudspeaker footprint.

Lee Sound Design's first step was to install 1000 square feet of fabric acoustical wall systems, reducing RT to two seconds. For a sound system capable of delivering both contemporary worship music and intelligible speech in the still-reverberant space he opted for ICONYX Digitally Steerable Arrays. "We have wide experience with steerable-beam line arrays in acoustically difficult spaces which has helped us build a reputation in these types of rooms."

Using Renkus-Heinz BeamWare and EASE AURA Lee modelled two IC32 arrays in the new sanctuary. "We can cover the main floor and the balcony with the same array, by using an upper beam," he says. "I was impressed by the ability of the system to cover the wraparound balcony with minimal level variation, and by the music quality of the ICONYX array. We're using it down to 100 Hz, with subwoofers coming in below that frequency." The subs are Renkus-Heinz PNX212s, driven by Crown CT amplifiers. He also specified a Hear Technologies HearBack system for the band, to control stage volume and minimize reflections off the marble altar.

The system's 'brains' are a Roland V-Mix console and Biamp Nexia processors, with Creston control panels for both audio and a video system that includes a Vaddio pan/tilt camera with Extron switching distributing signals to Eiki projectors and Sharp flat screen monitors.

In the Nave, where more acoustic treatment reduced RT to around two seconds, speech is the focus, and the consultant specified four ICONYX ICX7 fixed-beam arrays for high speech intelligibility in this social gathering area, along with two dummy enclosures for visual symmetry.

Messenger Media Systems of Covington, GA, an InfoComm International Gold Certified AudioVisual Solutions Provider, was awarded the installation contract, totaling around $235,000. Technical Supervisor Christopher Bragg says their biggest challenge was simply "pulling the wire, because the conduit had to snake through the much older existing structure. On the plus side, the ICONYX enclosures were very easy to install, aim, and program."

The man most responsible for making sure that the Church of St. Ann realized the goals of this ambitious capital project was Parish Administrator Jim Herrel. "The new system has helped us reach our goals completely", he says. "The music is as powerful as it ever was, and the spoken word is crystal clear anywhere in the church. We have clearly seen an improvement in participation in our liturgies with the use of this completely coordinated system. This was a partnership where everyone came together to make it happen."

First HD Broadcast of the Dove Awards Relies on
Fujinon HD Lenses
Camp Digital, a mobile production company based in Hendersonville, Tenn., used a variety of Fujinon lenses as part of its high-definition production services provided for the Gospel Music Association's 40th Annual Dove Awards program, which was televised live on the Gospel Music Channel recently.

Produced by Steve Gilreath Television for the Gospel Music Channel, the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards marked a milestone for both the Gospel Music Association and for Camp Digital. Broadcast for the first time in HD, the Dove Awards garnered the show's largest television audience in its history. The production was also Camp Digital's first live television project.

Camp Digital used a complement of eight Fujinon HD lenses from the company's primary HD production unit, Journey HD, for the telecast. Camp Digital also provided additional production support for the show's producers from its secondary production unit, Passage HD.

Journey HD, which first rolled out in December 2008, operates with eight Sony HDC-1500L cameras and on this show utilized a Fujinon HD lens package consisting of one XA88x 8.8BESM telephoto HD lens, one XA66X9.3BESM telephoto HD lens, one ZA22 X 7.6BERM handheld HD lens, one HA20X7.8BERM telephoto lens, and four ZA12X4.5BERM wide angle lenses.

According to Tom Gregory, Camp Digital Vice President of Business Development, Fujinon's reputation for excellence led to their selection for the truck's lens inventory. "Journey HD was designed and built to produce high-end entertainment events," he said. "We consider Fujinon lenses to be the standard for quality that provide the best production values. The Dove Awards production went off without a hitch and we owe that in part to the lenses."

Camp Digital set up both its trucks, Journey HD and Passage HD, on location for four days at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville to prepare for this year's Dove Awards. With more than 20 live performances by 42 artists, the two-hour live broadcast offered sizable technical and logistical challenges. The program required 390 microphones from Shure, as well as 24 different video projectors/monitors in varying aspect ratios.

Passage HD served as a support unit, housing video replay, nonlinear editing and graphics in the rear suite, plus an executive producer suite in front with dual 32-inch flat screen monitors displaying the live program and the director's multi-view screen. Four channels of RTS intercom provided monitoring throughout the entire system.

This month, Camp Digital is scheduled to provide production services on another HD show for Gospel Music Channel, Gospel Dream. Similar to American Idol, Gospel Dream is a performance competition for aspiring Christian music stars.

03. Vaddio Broadens HD PTZ Solutions with Canon BU-Series Cameras
Vaddio, a leading manufacturer and OEM distributor of specialty pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and high-end camera control systems, expanded its partnership with Canon this week by adding the Canon BU-45H and BU-50H to its product line of HD PTZ cameras.

"With our continued expansion into the broadcast market, adding Canon's BU-series PTZ cameras to our line was a natural fit," says Rob Sheeley, president of Vaddio. "The BU-45H and BU-50H are easily integrated with our ProductionVIEW HD-SDI switcher and Precision Camera Controller. Over the coming months, we anticipate designing even more peripherals for the BU-series cameras."

Vaddio's ProductionVIEW HD-SDI camera console offers HD-SDI and SD-SDI video switching, video mixing and automated control functionality. Due to increased demand of Serial Digital Interface (SDI), Vaddio created this multi-camera control system with an integrated 6 x 2 HD/SD-SDI seamless video switcher. The system is designed to connect easily via a single coax cable for video. ProductionVIEW HD-SDI includes the 3 Gigahertz HD-SDI standard (SMPTE 424M) for 1080p video, as well as SMPTE 292M (HD-SDI at 720p or 1080i) and SMPTE 259M (SD-SD).

The Canon BU-45H weatherproof Robotic PTZ 16:9 camera features three 1/3-inch (1.67 million-pixel) CCD sensors and a 20x optical zoom lens that incorporates built in Image Stabilizer technology and optional Auto Focus operation. It also comes with two built-in ND filters that are remotely controllable. Outputs include HD-SDI or SD-SDI with embedded audio (using a third-party microphone) and standard-definition composite NTSC. The BU-45H can output HD-SDI and composite video simultaneously for high-definition recording and standard-definition monitoring at the same time. This is an ideal HD solution for versatile indoor/outdoor applications such as traffic and weather monitoring, large event broadcasts, tourism promotions and more.

The Canon BU-50H indoor PTZ camera incorporates the same three 1/3-inch (1.67 million-pixel) CCD sensors, a 20x optical zoom lens (with advanced Auto Focus function and Canon's Image Stabilizer technology). Outputs include uncompressed HD-SDI or SD-SDI and standard-definition (SD) composite video. The HD-SDI can be used for HD recording and the composite output will support simultaneous SD monitoring. The BU-50H is capable of extremely smooth 300 degrees of panning and 80 degrees of tilt. Because of the extremely quiet P/T mechanisms, the BU-50H is well suited for very quiet environments such as conference facilities, lecture halls or houses of worship.

"We are delighted to work with Vaddio for our Robotic pan/tilt/zoom HD Camera Systems and supply the complete solutions that diverse end-user applications expect," comments Alan Lewis, marketing manager, Broadcast and Communications division, Canon U.S.A.
