Los Angeles – Cary, N.C.-based Production Media Inc., publisher of veteran technical production title Church Production Magazine, sent its staff to Los Angeles on Nov. 1-2, 2016. The draw was Church Production's second Church Production LIVE! Showcase Event, held at the prolific Mosaic and highlighting its ministry, mission and technical production methods.
Mosaic Executive Pastor Lawrence Fudge notes the mandate he believes the church must follow to effectively engage its surrounding Hollywood community: “The church's commitment to new technology is not only necessary, but a clear responsibility,” he says. “The church's challenge is no longer about finding bigger buildings. It's about finding new mediums, like 4K video.”
Attendees for Day One of the event met at Mosaic on Nov. 1 for a roundtable discussion with Fudge and Mosaic technical leaders, such as Adam Genzink, Mosaic filmmaker and volunteer, on the church's attitude and approach to technology in general and live streaming in particular.
The platinum sponsor for Church Production LIVE! Showcase Event at Mosaic was Sony, whose 4K cameras outfit Mosaic's worship space as part of a recent technology upgrade. Gold sponsors included Clear-Com and Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC), whose gear was also specified as part of the AVL upgrade. Silver sponsors included Elation and High End Systems.
Day One breakout sessions included topics such as 4K for content creation; church sound reinforcement for a audiophiles; and quality LED lighting for broadcast and live audiences. Sessions were presented by Mosaic staff as well as manufacturers' representatives that focus on church needs.
Of all the sessions offered, husband and wife Ryan and Susan Vesely, technical director and media team member respectively, with Paradise Alliance Church in Paradise, Calif., reported that Mosaic's sessions provided the biggest takeaways for them. “It was great to hear how another church handles its technical ministry, what technology they employ, and how it all comes together for them,” Ryan noted to CPM staff.
Day Two of the event at Mosaic was a tour of Sony Pictures Studios and an opportunity to learn how Affirm Films' leaders choose intellectual property for feature film production. “Facing the Giants” and “Soul Surfer” are among the studio's film credits for Christian audiences. Day Two also included a tour of various television sets and a chance to learn more about how 4K technology is enhancing the experience for audiences across the board.
