Christ Presbyterian Church, Carlsbad, CA
For nearly three decades, Christ Presbyterian Church worshipped in a fellowship hall with dreams of one day building a sanctuary. Rather than building new, domusstudio architecture of San Diego, California teamed with the church's committee to remodel the existing fellowship hall into a functional worship space that still met the needs of a multi-purpose space used for social events.
The architecture firm led the church team to think beyond the interior walls and open up the space to the community, removing the traditional threshold that many new visitors find difficult to cross.
The committee originally approached domusstudio on a simple interior remodel, but the architecture firm led the church team to think beyond the interior walls and open up the space to the community, removing the traditional threshold that many new visitors find difficult to cross.

The design team introduced wood throughout the multi-purpose worship space to make it warm and inviting.
A new social patio was created to greet worshippers and to provide a space for chance encounters and social ministries. Because of this space, attendees and visitors hang out longer between and after services, domusstudio representatives report.
Bi-fold doors removed the barrier separating the indoors from the outdoors and provide flex space for additional seating and for improved flow of movement. Inside, an interior fused glass art panel and new central skylight created by renowned Judson Studios provides a focal point and a hierarchy within the space. In addition, wood was introduced throughout the space to make it warm and inviting and to improve lighting, and fresh paint colors brighten the space.
Christ Prebyterian Church's committee reports that the design has exceeded the church's expectations--even motivating generous giving.
