QSC Touchmix-30 Pro
QSC recently updated the firmware to their TouchMix 30 Pro digital mixer with version 2.0 that enables third-party external control surface integration. The Icon Platform M+ is the company's preferred controller to pair with the TouchMix 30 Pro for your tactile and motorized fader needs.
An often-underutilized tool on a digital mixing console is the “scenes” or “snapshots,” feature which allows you to save and recall your console settings. This can help tremendously with speed, workflow, transition, and creativity. A scene or snapshot provides an easy method to obtain the right effects, level and input changes that are needed throughout any type of performance.
Every piece of music is unique, therefore, the dynamics will naturally change from song to song or movement to movement. These variables may call for adjustments in instrument levels, reverb, or delay time. A new song may also call for the guitar player to change from a Les Paul with humbuckers to a Fender Strat with single coil pickups, so your EQ settings will need to change as well. When attempting to make all of these changes on the fly, you’ll have less opportunity to make the quick and necessary changes needed to enhance the listening experience. In contrast, you can easily create scenes for all changes during rehearsal to ensure you’re prepared prior to the start of your service.
Scenes provide an excellent learning tool for volunteers and novice operators. You can use saved mixes (good and bad) to help sharpen the skills of your volunteers.
Digital mixers are incredibly flexible and easy to use - many even allow for fading in between scenes, to create a more natural transition from one song to the next. If scenes are preset in advance, this will allow the engineer to focus on the subtle changes that will transform a good mix into a great mix.
If during your second service the congregation size is much smaller, save your first service settings as a scene so it’s available for future use. While scenes are a huge benefit to even the most advanced users, they also provide an excellent learning tool for volunteers and novice operators. You can use saved mixes (good and bad) to help sharpen the skills of your volunteers. This will help build their confidence while reducing the potential for major errors at critical times. Don’t underestimate the power of scenes and how it can quickly and easily improve your mix as well as your worship service.
