When online viewers see a room like this, they expect to hear it too. A well-placed pair of room mics helps bridge the gap between what they see and what they hear.
Back when I was touring, it was common practice for our audio engineer to record our shows directly off the live FOH console. At the end of a long day, we would sometimes play those recordings back on the bus while everyone was unwinding. These are commonly referred to as board mixes.
Sometimes they sounded pretty good. Other times, they sounded exactly like what they were: a direct recording from the console, created for reference, not release. They were never intended for the public. They were just for us. We could hear how the band played and sang. This kind of raw, in-your-face playback was not for the weak at heart, but it made us better, like looking in the mirror and realizing it’s time to add sit-ups to your daily routine.
If you’ve ever heard a board mix, you probably noticed a few things. They are usually dryer than a studio recording. There is less reverb and less space around the instruments because the FOH engineer is mixing through a PA in a real auditorium. The room itself is adding reflections, reverb, and energy. The PA and the auditorium are already doing part of the work that reverb would do in a studio mix.
The other thing usually missing is the audience.
You might hear a little applause bleeding into open vocal mics or drum mics, but for the most part, a straight board mix can make a live event sound like it happened in an empty room, smaller than it actually was. The band may be playing and singing well. The room may have been full of people responding, but very little of that makes it to the recording in a usable way.
I bring this up because in my day job, when I’m asked to help a church with audio, I usually do a little pre-visit intel. I’ll go online and listen to their stream. In a lot of cases, I can tell pretty quickly if they are sending the FOH mix straight to the stream or if they have a separate broadcast mix.
The tells are pretty obvious.
If it sounds like a board mix, it probably is one. The vocals are all there. The band may be reasonably balanced. But the whole thing feels disconnected from what I’m seeing on screen. The camera shows an auditorium full of people worshiping, but the audio sounds like a clean rehearsal feed.
The best broadcast engineers don't "set and forget" room mics. They mix them throughout the service just like any other source.
Sometimes I’m surprised when I arrive and discover they actually do have a separate broadcast console or studio mix. They have the gear, but the stream still sounds like a board mix.
Almost without fail, they are missing two things: some broadcast-specific training and well-placed room mics.
Room mics, aka crowd mics, aka ambient mics, are not complicated in concept. They are microphones placed to capture the congregation, the response of the room, and the natural ambience of the worship environment. Used well, they can make a stream feel connected to what is actually happening in the auditorium. Used poorly, they can make the stream sound like someone left a pair of mics open in the back of the room and hoped for the best.
As we’ve discussed before, some churches want a high-caliber, well-produced online mix. Others are satisfied with a good quality, authentic worship presentation. After all, most church leaders agree that your online presence is your de facto curb appeal. In either scenario, the goal is usually the same: the online mix should represent what is happening in the worship auditorium. That includes the congregational experience.
So let’s talk about the basics.
A broadcast mix has a different job than the FOH mix. The FOH engineer is mixing for people sitting in the room, listening through a PA system, with the acoustics of the auditorium contributing to the experience. The broadcast engineer is mixing for someone listening on a phone, tablet, laptop, TV, or maybe earbuds or headphones.
That listener does not get the natural response of the auditorium. They only hear what you send them. If the only thing you send them is close mics, direct inputs, tracks, and speaking mics, the result may be clean, but it can also feel sterile. It may technically represent the inputs on stage, but it does not fully represent the worship service.
This is where room mics help.
A good set of room mics can add the missing layer of congregational singing, applause, laughter, spoken responses, and natural reverb. They don’t have to be loud. In fact, they usually shouldn’t be loud. The goal is to blend in enough of the room that the online listener can hear the church worshiping, not just the band performing.
If your service opens with a full congregation singing and your stream sounds like six vocalists and a worship band in a studio, you are missing part of the story. The online viewer can see people singing. They should be able to hear some of that response too.
We all need a little forgiveness
Room mics can also help smooth out some of the edges in a broadcast mix. A completely dry broadcast mix exposes every inconsistency. A little room ambience can provide a layer of forgiveness. It can help the mix breathe. It can glue things together in a way that is almost impossible to replicate with artificial reverb alone.
I’m not saying room mics will fix a bad mix. They won’t. But if the foundation is solid, room mics can make the broadcast sound more natural and more connected to the service.
God gave us two ears, use both of them
Start with two mics. Unless you are completely out of channels, a single mono mic usually will not add the sweetness we’re looking for. A stereo pair gives you width, space, and a more believable image of the room.
Dynamic mics are not a good fit for this role. Good condenser mics and in many cases shotgun mics are tailor made for this application. The specific model is less important than the placement and how you use them. If you already own a decent pair of condenser mics, start there before buying something new.
Placement will depend on the room, but the general rule is simple: point the mics at the congregation, not at the PA.
I often see churches place room mics at the back of the auditorium facing the stage. I understand why that seems logical. You’re trying to capture the whole room, so you go to the back of the auditorium. The problem is that those mics are often hearing more PA than people. At that point, you are basically re-miking the sound system from a bad location.
The best room mic level is the one you barely notice—until you mute it.
A better starting point is usually near the front of the room, facing the congregation from the stage perspective. The mics can be flown, mounted discreetly, or placed on stands if needed. In some environments, placing them under and slightly behind the main arrays can work well. The idea is to capture the congregation while minimizing the direct blast of the PA.
You will never eliminate the PA from the room mics completely. That’s not realistic. The PA is part of what is happening in the room. But it should not dominate what the ambient mics are contributing.
Once the mics are placed, bring them into the broadcast mix carefully. Pan them left and right. High-pass them as needed so they are not adding low-frequency mud. You may need some EQ to reduce harshness or boxiness. A little compression can help control sudden applause or big responses, but don’t smash them to death. You still want them to feel natural.
Just a touch of verb
Most of the time, the best room mic level is the one you barely notice until it’s not there, like a tastefully used reverb. If you mute the room mics and the mix suddenly feels smaller, dryer, and less alive, you’re probably in the right neighborhood. If everyone watching online is suddenly very aware of the room mics, they are probably too loud.
In most cases, crowd mics need to be actively mixed based on what is happening in the auditorium. During congregational singing, they may come up a little. During applause or response moments, they may come up more. During the sermon, you may want to lean into them for laughter, spoken response, or other moments when the congregation is part of what is happening. The rest of the time, they may need to live a little lower, just enough to smooth out the sound.
This is why I don’t love the “set it and forget it” approach. Room mics are part of the mix. Treat them like they are another instrument of sorts.
For churches without a separate broadcast console, room mics can still be useful. Even if you cannot actively mix them throughout the service, you can find a good compromise between adding ambience and capturing congregational response. It just takes some trial and error. If you are sending a FOH matrix or a version of your main mix to the stream, you can add room mics specifically to that stream feed without sending them back into the PA. That last part is important.
Don’t route your room mics into the auditorium PA. Ever.
On most digital consoles, you can route room mics to a broadcast matrix, stream bus, or record feed only. This lets you enhance the online mix without affecting the room. Even a church using a simple FOH-based stream can see improvement with a properly routed pair of room mics.
There is also a useful double-duty benefit here. Those same room mics can be fed carefully into the worship team’s IEM mixes. One of the biggest complaints from musicians and singers using in-ear monitors is that they feel disconnected from the congregation. That is one reason people pull out one ear, which is a bad habit and a good way to create long-term hearing problems.
A tasteful amount of room mic in the IEMs can help the team feel connected without removing one ear. It gives them some sense of the congregation singing, responding, and participating. Again, this needs to be done carefully. Too much room mic in IEMs can make the mix washy and imprecise.
You may need different processing or level control for broadcast and IEM use. What works in the broadcast mix may be too much or too bright in someone’s ears. If your console allows separate EQ or routing for those feeds, take advantage of it.
The Math
Now, for my system and design engineer friends, yes, there is some science involved with placement, delay, and time alignment. In a new installation with a competent system designer, it is certainly possible to include the make, model, placement, quantity, and delay settings for crowd mics in the design process.
In the real world, that level of detail often doesn’t happen. In fact, crowd mics may be completely overlooked. In many churches I’ve worked with over the years, room mics end up being an add-on well after the system has been designed.
So while I would love to tell you there is an easy formula for placement and time alignment, there are too many variables for a single solution. You can pick a spot where the mics capture what you want to hear, take measurements, and apply delay to those input channels. Sometimes that helps. Sometimes it doesn’t. In my experience, especially when adding room mics to existing systems, good placement has a much greater effect on the result than time alignment.
But the guy on YouTube says…
Don’t add delay just because someone on YouTube said to do it. Listen. Try it. If it helps, use it. If it doesn’t, move on.
The same goes for adding more mics. More mics do not automatically equal better ambience. Start with a simple stereo pair and learn how they behave in your room. Once you understand that, you can decide if you need anything else. Whether you choose to nerd-out and time align everything or just pick a spot and go for it, you will have to experiment with mic location. Regardless of what the math says, it takes real-time trial and error to find the sweet spot.
In one church where I spent a long season mixing broadcast, we experimented with multiple setups. At one time, there were ten ambient room mics in play. Ultimately, we reduced it to four. Two were placed widely above the stage, facing the congregation, slightly behind the main PA arrays. The other two were on the front edge of the stage. I didn’t use any time alignment, and they worked great when properly balanced.
As mentioned earlier, making the room mics available to the IEMs can be a great help. In that particular setup, the two lower mics on the front of the stage worked best for IEMs. The upper mics didn’t translate as well in ears, but they were very helpful in broadcast.
A great way to evaluate your room mics is to listen back to moments when the congregation is singing or even applauding. Those moments will tell you a lot. Are you hearing people or mostly PA? Does the room feel natural or slappy? Are the mics helping the mix feel connected, or are they making it blurry?
The online listener doesn't just need to hear the band. They need to hear the church.
The good news is this does not have to be expensive or complicated. Many churches already own microphones that can be used for this. Most consoles already have the routing needed to make it work.
Ask yourself what is missing from the stream. Does it sound like a service or a board mix? Can you hear the congregation when they are clearly participating? Does the broadcast feel connected to what the cameras are showing? Are your worship leaders and musicians isolated in their IEMs when a little ambience could help them feel the auditorium?
Room mics are not the most glamorous part of a broadcast system. They won’t get the attention of a new console, or a new WAVES server. But they will make a noticeable difference in how natural and inviting your stream feels.
So start simple. Use two mics. Point them at the people not the PA. Blend them carefully and intentionally.
