Sony is introducing a wide range of new products at NAB Show 2025, among them the HDC-F5500V Super 35mm 4K CMOS system camera for live production will make its debut. Building on the success of its predecessor, the camera features a global shutter imager, PL lens mount, and a new optional software license adds VND capabilities for increased depth of field control and a wide range of brightness control through virtual iris capabilities.
“Designed for the demands of today’s live productions, the camera provides beautifully detailed imagery and ND control during on-tally. It also offers workflow advantages including a wealth of features for HDR and SDR production, and the same infrastructure as its HDC-5500V 2/3-inch counterpart, including IP networking, remote multi-camera operation and an in-CCU (camera control unit) record option. It is planned to be available in summer 2025,” the announcement states.
At the heart of this camera system is Sony’s Super 35 mm 4K CMOS sensor. “The large sensor in the HDC camera series achieves high sensitivity with an impressive signal-to-noise ratio. It’s teamed with proven global shutter technology to capture stable, precise 4K (UHD) images even with fast-moving subjects: designed for sport and live entertainment productions involving LED displays and laser beams,” Sony’s website explains.
The pre-installed viewfinder slide mechanism is designed for camera operators to achieve improved functionality by minimizing their body movements during panning. This feature is especially useful in cramped spaces like tracked dollys, stadium
platforms, and scaffolding, where limited mobility can hinder the desired shots. The pre-installed slide mechanism enhances shooting flexibility and usability, with a smoothly-sliding viewfinder that can be moved closer to the axis of tripod rotation to reduce changes in the viewing angle.
