Big callings often start in small churches, with young leaders learning the ropes by serving.
This one is for the young people, the ones that aren’t in charge, but maybe they are in charge because they’re the only person in their church off some country road or a forgotten suburban side street who knows how to run anything having to do with church tech.
You might be feeling a little overwhelmed or perhaps under-resourced. You’ve been handed this job by your pastor and now you’ve got to make it happen on a budget of about five dollars with YouTube and churchproduction.com as your only guide. You might be asking, how on earth am I going to pull this off?
If so, be encouraged—we’ve all been there.
Most of us started exactly where you’re at—staring down a dusty console and a humming old media computer.
I don’t think I’ve talked to a single church production leader who went to school to be a church production leader. While a few career tracks exist at some select colleges around the US, most of us started exactly where you’re at right now, staring down a dusty audio console, a dimming projector, and a media computer that hums like an old Cessna.
Honestly, you’re in the best spot you could be in. You have a whole venue to play with and nothing but time. Mostly, I want you to understand that if you love doing this, that love is enough. That love is the drive that will make your mixes better, push you to design better graphics for worship, and guide you when you’re tired and don’t want to show up on Sunday morning.
Let that passion make you better at everything you do. Be the best you can be because you love what you do, it serves your church, and it pleases the Lord.
Even cranky veterans can’t stop a hungry learner—keep knocking, and doors will open.
You have what it takes. Don’t let anyone embarrass you because you haven’t learned about one thing or another. If you’re at some conference or another church and you see something you’ve never seen before, walk up to whoever’s running tech and ask about it. Tell them you think it’s cool and you’d like to learn about it.
God sees your passion—because He put it there.
Be warned—some of the veterans you’ll come across are cranky. Ignore them. If they don’t want to help you, that’s on them. Don’t let them discourage you. Keep looking, searching, knocking. You will find someone somewhere who sees your passion and will pour into you because it’s not only you that’s doing the looking—the Lord is looking to, and he wants you to thrive.
The Lord is with you. He sees your passion and loves your passion because he put it there. Go learn with him. He’s a good Father who wants to work alongside you.
