Where do your loyalties lie? Are you loyal to the leadership of your church? Or are you only loyal to your own interests?
Tech directors often ride like the Lone Ranger. We prefer to work alone. We don't want someone looking over our shoulder. Sometimes we think that just doing our job is good enough. As long as everything gets done at the end of the day that's all that matters.
But, how is your attitude in the process? Are you doing what you are doing because it is just a job or is it out of loyalty to God and the leadership of your local church? I have met tech directors that really didn't care much about their senior leadership. They just figured that if they did the job then all was fine. If they were really honest, they weren't loyal at all.
In Exodus 17 paints a different story about loyalty. In the chapter, we read the army of Amelek had attacked God's chosen people, so Moses sent Joshua and his men into battle. Moses figured that he would help by standing on a nearby hill holding his staff up. Who would have thought that would work? But it did.
As long as Moses' staff was held up in the air, the Israelites would start winning the battle. If Moses wanted to take a break and rest his arms then the Amelekites would begin to win. It must have been kind of like a video game!
This epic battle went back and forth and eventually Moses became exhausted and could no longer hold his hands in the air. Because Moses was so tired, the Israelites began to lose the battle. So these two guys, Aaron and Hur, decided to take matters into their own hands.
Aaron and Hur found Moses a comfy rock to sit on. After Moses sat down, they each grabbed one of Moses' arms and held them up. With Moses' arms now held high, the Israelites once again started to gain the advantage. They did this until sunset and as a result Joshua and his army were able to defeat the Amelekites.
In this account we see that God had given Moses the anointing to help the Israelites win the battle, but he grew weary. Aaron and Hur could have felt that Moses was the “man of God” and that they had not business intervening. They could have figured that their work was done for the day and just went home. They could have been a little bit jealous and wondered why they should help when it was Moses that was getting all of the credit.
Fortunately Aaron and Hur were not only loyal to God but they were also loyal to their leader, Moses. They didn't care about who got the credit. They simply wanted to help their God-appointed leader carry out what God had called him to do.
So, how loyal are you? Are you one that holds up the arms of your pastor and other leaders in your church? Or do you think feel like it isn't your role or responsibility. Even if your job is primarily behind the scenes, it is not just a job. It is ministry. And it is important that we are loyal to our leaders and hold their arms up and support them in whatever it is that God has called them to do.
