Now that the dust has settled on NAB and InfoComm, I thought it might be a good time to reevaluate the cinema camera landscape and try to bring a little clarity to some misconceptions about them. This article is in no way meant to be comprehensive; you can tell by some of the notable cameras missing from this lineup. However, here are some options and some things many people get wrong or don’t understand.
Open Gate and the Social Video Problem
The buzzword for the past year seems to be open gate. For those hiding under a rock and not aware of what an open gate is, it’s when the camera utilizes the full surface of its imaging sensor instead of cropping into a standard resolution. I’m sure many people weren’t aware that, strictly speaking, sensors are much bigger than they need to be. However, TVs are a certain size and shape, and it makes sense to conform to that. Also, if you have ever seen “oversampled” on a spec sheet, that’s where the extra information is coming from. The big value here is that the full 3:2 or 4:3 aspect-ratio image can be easily cropped into a 9x16 vertical for socials without sacrificing the standard landscape resolution. Framing for your standard audience doesn’t sacrifice your socials. In some cases, it also unlocks a higher resolution from the camera. In short, it gives you more options. In cases like the Canon C50, you can simultaneously record a one resolution to one card and a cropped resolution to another.
What’s the downside? The same thing is anytime you want to push the envelope on electronics, heat. When the camera is using only 35-55% of its sensor’s photosites, it won’t generate as much heat as when it uses the entire sensor. Any good technician knows heat is the enemy, so will shooting open gate all the time cause your camera to overheat and/or fail sooner than not? Logically yes. In practice, it depends more on the camera. If it has no fan and it’s a small, compact DSLR body, it’s more likely than a box or camcorder-style body with multiple fans. Something like the Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 12K, I don’t fear overheating because one look at the top and bottom of the camera would show you it’s designed with cooling airflow in mind.
Why Global Shutter Matters
Global shutter is another buzzword that often gets thrown around a lot. At its simplest, camera shutters work one of two ways: rolling and global. Rolling shutter works by scanning line by line from the top of the frame to the bottom, exposing as it goes. Global shutter exposes the entire frame at the same time. Take, for example, the only global-shutter camera on this list: the RED V-Raptor [X]. The upside of the global shutter is that the image doesn’t become wobbly when the camera moves quickly, and straight lines remain straight even during whip pans. Also, things that move quickly in frame don’t turn to jello, and flashes are captured throughout the image rather than only in sections of it. Meaning it also tends to eliminate LED banding, more on that later.
Many, if not most, cameras have a rolling shutter. Take, for example, the Sony FX line, all of which I’m pretty sure are more affordable than any global shutter camera on the market. The only real downside of global shutter is the price; cameras featuring a global shutter are just more expensive than their rolling-shutter counterparts, typically by a noticeable amount.
Megapixels: Resolution vs. Image Quality
Megapixels are one of the more confusing specs on video cameras. You would think they only apply to the photography side, but that isn’t the case. Megapixel is really the measurement of the resolution of the final image, how many tiny squares are in the picture. However, each tiny square is captured on its own photosite, which is the light receptor on the camera’s sensor. A standard 4K resolution camera only needs about 8 megapixels (3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400, roughly 8.3 megapixels), but most cinema cameras boast 12, 24, or more megapixels. Why all the extra megapixels if you only need 8? The extra megapixels allow oversampling of the image. Since there is more info than needed, it allows for things like mathematically downscaling the image to reduce noise or for image stabilization. This logic would lead one to think that more megapixels mean more resolution, which means a better image.
However, that isn’t strictly the case; the best example is the Sony FX3 and FX30, essentially the same camera with different sensors: the FX3 has 12.1 megapixels on a full-frame sensor, and the FX30 has 26 megapixels on an APS-C sensor. Since the FX30 has more megapixels on a smaller sensor, each individual photosite is smaller and less efficient compared to the low-light monster that the FX3 is. With its larger sensor and lower megapixel count, it can capture light far more effectively because each photosite is so much bigger. Higher megapixels also tend to lead to more image processing and larger file sizes, which runs counter to the old adage “more is better”.
Ghost Frame: The Bleeding Edge
Now, this is interesting and easily misunderstood, and downright confusing if you have never seen it. It’s really post-production techniques combined with live production technology or vice versa. For those not familiar, this allows a camera to match an LED wall’s refresh rate so precisely that the LED wall can produce two separate images. A green screen for the camera that can be live-keyed. While the local audience sees the intended content on the LED wall. This gives you the opportunity to create two very different shows simultaneously, without negatively affecting either audience. A few manufacturers are working in this space, and it’s been demoed at multiple NAB booths over the past 3 years. With the global shutter mentioned earlier, RED again has the right hardware for the job. Far easier to match a shutter that is exposing all at once than one that is constantly moving. RED calls their version Phantom Track. It’s really nerdy stuff, but it’s very cool.
While it is gaining in acceptance, it’s far from ubiquitous. Meaning this isn’t something everyone knows how to fix; in fact, most non-techies would have a hard time understanding what they are looking at, never mind troubleshooting it. So, while it’s incredibly cool, you are on the bleeding edge, which my mentor used to say, “is called that because it’s where all the pain is.”
Old Does Not Mean Obsolete
The last misconception I wanted to touch on is camera age. While we tend to focus on what’s next and what’s new, It’s one of the reasons the Kinefinity Vista got so much attention at NAB: it was so new, the final specs weren’t even available, and may still not be by the time this article is published. I think it’s important to focus on what’s consistent: these cameras are just tools. The features may make things easier and faster, but at the end of the day, the ability to make a pretty picture is camera-agnostic. So, while the features are great and the technology is cool, an old camera is in many ways still capable. If you can make a pretty picture on more basic technology, all these features become force multipliers for what you can accomplish, and a breeding ground for creativity. I have seen people use cameras that were sunset ages ago, with stellar results. It may require more work, but at the end of the day, skill is greater than features.
With those misconceptions in mind, the cameras below are not meant to be a definitive ranking. They represent a range of tools that illustrate many of the features discussed above, including open-gate recording, oversampling, global shutter, ecosystem integration and budget-conscious workflows. The right choice still depends on your room, your team, your volunteers and the kind of content you are actually trying to create.
Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 12K ($8,245)
This camera features a 12K RGBW large-format sensor delivering 16 stops of dynamic range. It is capable of open-gate shooting and includes interchangeable lens mounts and built-in ND filters. For churches already using Blackmagic tools, one of its biggest advantages is how tightly it integrates with the broader Blackmagic ecosystem, including DaVinci Resolve and ATEM workflows.
Canon C50 ($3,899)
7K full-frame CMOS sensor with 3:2 open-gate mode and a 32.4-megapixel resolution. Features simultaneous crop recording across dual card slots, so you can capture your social media content without ever turning your camera sideways or sacrificing your regular landscape shot.
It also has dual base ISO, electronic rolling shutter, and 16 stops of dynamic range.
Kinefinity Vista ($2,499)
Vista was the big, unexpected news from NAB. Not much has been confirmed about details and specs, but the prototype featured a 6K full-frame sensor, a 240GB internal SSD, and two full-sized HDMI ports, making it an unconventional but very interesting option. No confirmation on release date, but the smart money is on Cine Gear, so be on the lookout for this Vista in June.
RED V-Raptor [X] ($29,995)
The only camera on this list to feature a global shutter, with e 35.4 megapixel 8K CMOS sensor. 17+ stops of dynamic range can shoot 4K at 240 FPS. The V-Raptor is also Phantom track capable, so it can record 2 tracks, one green screen and one with LED content, offering loads of flexibility.
Sony FX30 ($2,099)
The least expensive camera on this list, but don’t let the price fool you; pound for pound, this camera punches well above its price tag. Featuring a 26.1 APS-C sensor and a similar body style to the FX3. Capable of shooting 4K at 120 FPS with 14+ stops of dynamic range, not to mention the 5-axis IBIS. Also functions with Sony’s Monitor and Control app, making it a great option for inexpensive multi-camera situations.
