The Table Dallas meets for Sunday services at The Mill Street House in Lewisville, Texas. With a congregation of around 60 to 80 people, the church practices an informal style of worship that, quite literally, takes place around a table. Each week, Pastor David Wahlstedt leads three services––the Family Waffle Table, the Sunday Brunch Table, and the Sunday Evening Table––which begin with a meal, then worship, and then a lesson based on Scripture. During these lessons, members are invited to join in conversation and debate different ideas on faith and life, all in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
When the pandemic hit, The Table moved its services to Zoom. These were held from March through June 2020, and then once again from October 2020 to May 2021. Nancy Jumper, who has been attending the church since 1989, recounts that from her perspective, moving to the video conferencing platform went relatively smoothly, and was an effective way to remain connected.
“I was shocked at how few problems we had––it was so simple and seamless,” Jumper says, adding that everyone seemed to quickly adapt to this different way of doing church. She notes that perhaps this was the case because of The Table’s non-traditional approach to worship. “I feel like we were very natural at it from the beginning, and maybe that’s because we’re used to going to church and talking.”
