The livestream at LifeMission is not meant to compete with the in-room worship experience. It is meant to help people take a first step toward it.
The livestream at LifeMission was never supposed to be mindblowing. That is not a criticism. It is a philosophy, and it was handed down deliberately. For years, upper leadership at LifeMission, based in Olathe, KS, a Kansas City suburb, held a clear position on what the stream was for and, more importantly, what it was not.“ The only purpose of the livestream is to get people in the door,” says Kaden Vandorn, the on-staff production tech. “It should never be a good alternative to attending in person.”
The livestream, in their framework, is something closer to a front porch than a living room. It is the preview, the invitation, the thing that gives someone just enough of a reason to show up. “A reasonable preview of what your experience will be,” Kaden says. “Just a necessary alternative in case you can’t be here.”
The livestream was never meant to replace Sunday morning. It was meant to make the invitation clearer.
That framework kept the investment modest for a long time. Not negligent—just restrained. Their existing setup was already more capable than most churches at their level would attempt. The PA was well-tuned for the sanctuary, and their front-of-house engineer had spent years mixing with one eye on the broadcast, developing an instinct for how a live room translates to a tiny phone speaker at nine o’clock on a Sunday morning. Those prerequisites, Kaden notes, were the biggest factors in making the stream work at all. The rest was a matter of routing.
What they were doing was more elegant than it sounds. Off the Allen & Heath dLive console —a board well-regarded in live production for the quality of its DM64 stage box preamps — they pulled separate mix buses for drums, instruments, and vocals. Not a fold of the house, but their own buses, calibrated specifically for the stream environment. Pre-fader sends meant the broadcast mix wasn’t chasing the house every time the engineer pulled a fader. And at the end of the chain, two finishing tools came into play. The first was the Waves L4 Maximizer in Safe mode, targeting a loudness around -10 LUFS — louder than the standard broadcast target of -14, but it held together, and it didn’t feel squeezed. The second was Curves AQ, an AI-driven equalizer that Kaden describes as a tonal correction, a way of nudging a mix shaped for a large live room back toward something that reads cleanly on earbuds. “Correcting for the PA tone,” he says, “and bringing it a little closer to flat. Not perfect, but a little enhancement.”
It worked. But they were still leaving something on the table, and eventually the leadership’s intention shifted enough to let them go get it.
The upgrade they eventually made did not cost as much as you might expect. The core of the new setup is a Mac Mini M4 —a base model upgraded to 24 gigabytes of RAM running Logic Pro and the Waves Ultimate plugin suite. The Mac Mini connects to the broader system through Dante, the audio networking protocol that routes digital audio across the building without copper analog snake runs. A modest managed network switch handles traffic. Old Yamaha five-inch studio monitors sit at the workstation. Mid-range Beyerdynamic headphones round out the monitoring chain. Kaden steps out of the booth a few times each service to pull up the YouTube stream on his phone and check whether what he’s hearing on the monitors is what’s actually landing on the other end.
The system stayed affordable because the goal stayed focused.
Total cost, assuming a church already has a console with Dante capability and a basic network: under $3,000. “We’re doing a lot on basically just a fiber line, a network switch, and the Mac Mini and Logic with Waves,” Kaden says. The Mac Mini runs the entire session at roughly twenty percent of its processing capacity. Any Apple silicon chip — M1, M2, the base M4 — is more than enough for the task. The machine that was nearly inaccessible at retail during the recent memory shortage is, at its standard price, still what Kaden describes as “the best deal in computing” for this kind of use case. The comfort in that extends to churches that are not running an Allen & Heath at all. For a congregation in the Behringer ecosystem, the path is actually simpler. No Dante card would be needed, no managed switch, no additional networking expense.“ A church in the Behringer ecosystem could just do this via USB,” Kaden says. Plug it into a Mac Mini, open Logic, and most of the work is done. The tools built into Logic Pro, even without a Waves subscription, are more than adequate to get a stream to a reasonably professional standard. “It’s just a matter of familiarity with Logic,” Kaden notes.

That point matters because the listening environment matters, and understanding it changes what adequate actually means. “Ninety-five percent of the people tuning in are probably tuning in on their phone,” Kaden says. That is not a reason to do poor work; it is a reason to do calibrated work. A well-run aux mix off a board that the engineer understands, finished with a limiter and some attention to how it lands on consumer speakers, will serve most congregations better than an elaborate chain nobody fully knows how to operate.
There is something clarifying about that ceiling. “It can be done really well with a lot less.” Their evolution isn’t over yet, though. What LifeMission is moving toward adds cost, but not extravagance. The next step is integrating Waves LV1, a software console platform that, when paired with a Waves Sound Grid server, offloads all plugin processing from the host computer onto dedicated hardware. They already have a server, an older unit with an 8th-generation Intel processor retired from previous use in their live room, which will become the broadcast server once a dedicated Sound Grid network line is run alongside the existing Dante feeds. The LV1 software is licensed by channel count, which keeps the entry price accessible for smaller operations.
The system was not built around what was possible. It was built around what was useful.
Kaden added a hardware controller because mixing a live service with a mouse is a different kind of discipline than mixing in post, and the flow of a Sunday morning does not leave much room for imprecision. But the controller is optional. Any MIDI surface can likely be mapped to the software, and some engineers will not miss the hardware at all.The total picture with a console, a Dante or USB connection, an Apple silicon Mac Mini at around $700, Logic Pro at $200, and a Waves Ultimate subscription is a chain that would be difficult to call expensive relative to what it produces. Leveraging used gear like LifeMission brings the total cost under $3,000. The more complete version, with LV1 and the repurposed SoundGrid server, adds a couple of thousand more. Either way, it is a fraction of what most churches assume broadcast-quality audio requires.The front porch doesn’t have to be modest. It just has to be honest. That conviction runs deep for Kaden and LifeMission. A well-built preview is still a better invitation than a poor one, and it does not take very much to get it right.
