AJ Layton is the lighting director at Grace Family Church in Tampa, Florida. As part of this Church Production Road Test User Experience, Layton and his team agreed to try out ADJ’s Focus Spot 7Z. The fixture offers 20,000 Lumens of output and beam-shaping features that include CMY+CTO color mixing, animation wheel, rotating gobo wheels, prism options and frost filters.
“We got to use it during our weekend services over a couple of weekends as well as our youth service,” Layton explains. “When we first pulled them out, I'd say they exceeded our expectations, actually. It felt like they were well-built.”
One feature that impressed them most was that both double gobo wheels rotate. Layton says he usually only sees that option in more high-end fixtures. “It's something we used a lot. We use a gobo, which is a pattern in a light. When we make some textures, we can actually just make that pattern shift a little bit slowly or fast, whatever the moment needs. And then the big thing about having it on both gobo wheels is that you don't ever wind up with a gobo that can't rotate. Pretty often, fixtures will have one rotating wheel wind up selecting a gobo that you like a lot, but it won't rotate. So, in this fixture, they all rotate.”
Another popular feature with Layton’s team were the DMX Channel Modes. It gave them a choice of how many channels the light can use, giving them an option when not a lot of DMX channels are available, the fixture can be run in a lower channel mode. “We could run it in a lower channel mode and give up a few functions that maybe we don't need. Whereas if we have channels available and kind of an operator that may use those features, we can run it in a higher mode,” he adds.
And he says the CRI filter is a great tool to have for white balance. “All I had to do was drop in the CRI filter and the white looked great on our cameras. It kept me from having to do any type of color tuning. In all of our presets, I was able just to throw a white and not blow out or feel green on camera.”
