As part of Church Production’s Road Test User Experience, Atomos sent their Shogun Ultra Monitor/Recorder to Times Square Church in New York City. This is a church that really pushes their filmmaking and video ministry to the limit. Times Square Church Lead Filmmaker Austin Allen says they had an incredible time with it. “We used it in live production. We used it here in our studio. We used it for smaller projects as well, and we've really, really impressed with some of the features that we were able to try out,” Allen says.
Allen says they loved that the monitor was well designed and could be used with just about any camera and that there are a lot of options to recording externally, use it in live production or anywhere you need good data or codec to record to because you can essentially send a really high-quality H.265 file to a cloud.
“…maybe you have an editor or a social media person who's not on campus with you,” Allen explains. “You can also be recording all of your data that you want into your camera, and you could also be simultaneously sending a signal in H.265 straight to your cloud.”
Allen says you can use it as redundancy or for speed to really get out high-quality footage into a format that's easily usable for maybe a volunteer or social media, or even for your online broadcast.
“Maybe you don't need full 6K Red files or full 4K ARRI raw files, you just need a really good H.265 to put on YouTube or to put onto your website. I think that's where this comes in handy. In addition to being a great monitor, it gives you an additional means of output for your camera,” Allen enthuses.
He says it even helps with color-matching different cameras.
