Transformation Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma is a technology powerhouse of worship. They were one of the first churches to ever go to 4K HDR with their broadcast, and they’re always trying to push the envelope for technology and creativity. They put a priority on visual media and will see an average of 25,000 to 55,000 people watching online live through social media. Right now, Transformation Church is using mostly all Sony cameras from filming to the live broadcast and happily agreed to be part of the Church Production Road Test User Experience for Sony’s new Alpha 9 III - Full-frame Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera.
...having video with a great 4K image that can shoot in S-Log3 has been a joy.
“Putting an A-9 III into the system was super seamless. It was super easy, but the quality was the same all the way across the board, and it has just been a joy to work with,” says Transformation’s Film and Live Video Director Chad Vegas. “It has been a total game changer for us, especially our social media team, just being able to have a global shutter so they're not worried about the different LED walls that they're shooting at. With a global shutter, you can get beautiful, crisp images, whether that's photography, but especially with video. If you're shooting into an LED wall, refresh rates come into play and a lot of times with a rolling shutter you'll see these lines or these rolling lines that go up. Being able to have a global shutter pretty much eliminates most of that.”
"It's one of the best autofocus systems we've used.” - Chad Vegas, Video Director, Transformation Church, Tulsa, OK
Vegas says the recapture feature is great for volunteers, especially when they’re learning how to capture moments in worship. He says while the A9 III is geared towards photography, having video with a great 4K image that can shoot in S-Log3 has been a joy.
“It's very versatile. You can use it for both photography and video, and the quality of both is very great,” Vegas says. “One of our main photographers here kept talking about those tactile buttons to be able to have a bunch of different presets and settings that you can just access on the fly just by honestly muscle memory. And the cool thing about it too is that the autofocus system on there is superb. It's amazing. It's one of the best autofocus systems we've used.”
