COVER STORIES

Iconic adaptive reuse

This editor began covering the projects of Dallas-based architecture firm Omniplan in the late 1990s at Primedia (Penton) in Atlanta, now Informa. The projects I covered at that time were national retail designs, and nobody was doing it quite like Omniplan and architect Scott Hall.

By 2010 I was back in touch with Hall, covering Omniplan’s design of Watermark Community Church in Dallas. In a bold move, Watermark had reached out to Omniplan, choosing the firm for its innovative approach to public spaces—and for the fact that Omniplan had not yet designed churches.

The result of the collaboration was Watermark Church—a master planned adaptive reuse of a one-time office park. And it sparked a church design movement across the U.S. Through the years, Watermark has held fast to its leaders’ original values and vision, and to Omniplan’s superb design thrust. In homage, our feature this edition takes a look at the many facets of Watermark.
