Since 1976, Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach, Calif., has occupied a former bowling alley that overlooks the Pacific Ocean on Pacific Coast Highway. Working with the church, San Diego-based domusstudio architecture has reimagined the building with an open, transparent and inviting three-story welcome lobby.

The design firm was founded in 1986 as Dominy + Associates Architects. Its principals are members of the American Institute of Architects, based in Washington, D.C.
