LED fixtures are getting smaller and smaller. Manufacturers seem to be racing to figure out how to fit the most powerful lights into the smallest package. We saw several new compact LED fixtures at the LDI conference this past November. That being said, Mega Systems seems to have hit a home run with its new Baby Color Q-70. We just received a demo model, and we are very impressed with its power and diminutive size and weight. It's hard to believe that so much light can come out of such a tiny package.
The Baby Color Q-70 uses seven 10-watt quad-chip LEDs inside its 8.25- by 4- by 7.25-inch, five-pound housing. Utilizing a red, green, blue, and white quad-color LED chip, the Baby Color Q-70 produces a wide range of pastel and deep saturated colors. Although we have not done a complete review quality test of this fixture, a quick side-by-side comparison with a much larger quad-color LED fixture revealed comparable results in color range and power. One of the reasons this fixture is so powerful is its 25-degree beam angle. The included diffuser spreads the beam to 50 degrees. In addition, the strobe on this little dynamo is impressive, indeed. It is extremely bright and has a variable speed function.
Control & general impressions
The fixture is controlled via DMX and has strobe, macro, and dimmer effects. To change modes the Baby Color Q-70 uses a simple four-button selectable menu with an LED display that allows you to select the fixture mode, DMX address, and special effects. Control options for audio trigger and master slave are also included. It also has a PowerCon in and out and three-pin XLR in and out connections. Other features include four selectable dimmer curves, 255-step per color stand-alone programming, and several stand-alone presets. One of the best features of this light, though, is that it consumes only 48 watts of power.
Many LED fixtures now incorporate a double mounting yoke into their designs that allows you to set the fixture down on the floor or hang it from a pipe. We are happy to see that the Baby Color Q-70 includes this feature.
The Mega Systems Baby Color Q-70 is an exciting new player in the mini-LED fixture market. This light could be a great choice for smaller churches that need a small, low profile fixture with a lot of punch. We look forward to a deeper review of this little, yet powerful, light. Good things do come in small packages.
