There are a lot of lighting companies out there, and if you're like many church techs, you tend to be familiar with what's already in your sanctuary—because that's where you learned lighting in the first place. So, CPM thought it would be useful to contact the major lighting fixture manufacturers and see what they most recommend for the house of worship market from within their product lines.
The scope of this article is limited to the backbone of most lighting rigs: static (i.e., non-automated) fixtures.
Traditionally, these have been powered by Tungsten lamps. Tungsten produces a beautiful warm light with a high color-rendering index (CRI, or the ability to show the true color of an object). Many manufacturers, though, have added LED fixtures to their product lines, or focus entirely on LED technology. While significantly more expensive than your typical Tungsten fixtures, these fixtures use less power than Tungsten and don't need to have their light source replaced nearly as often.
In the slideshow above, we present a list of the manufactures that responded to our request for fixture information with the fixture they feel best meets the needs of a typical small- to mid-sized house of worship. It should be noted that most of these manufactures have far more fixtures than the one presented in this article, so spend some time perusing their websites to get a full understanding of the offerings. Also, just because a manufacturer feels that a particular fixture works well for the church market doesn't automatically mean that fixture will be the best fit for your specific needs. You should always consult with someone who is experienced in developing lighting plots for churches and will take the time to become familiar with your ministry style—to help ensure that you get the right fixtures for your needs and your budget.
