Teradek introduces the all-new Teradek Wave, a streaming monitor that handles encoding, smart event creation, network bonding, multistreaming, and recording on a 7” daylight-viewable touchscreen display. Designed to prep multiple events ahead of time, bond several internet connections together and send live streams to multiple destinations at once. A Sharelink subscription is required. Sharelink is Teradek’s cloud platform that’s available as a paid subscription through sharelink.tv.
“Whether it’s a wedding that needs a quick prep. A memorial service that needs a stable internet connection. A sermon that needs a multi-platform broadcast. A youth night that needs a recorded file of the lecture. Or an outdoor service that needs a daylight-viewable monitor. Now, you and your team of volunteers can do it all in one fluid motion,” the announcement states.
Outdoor services can make it difficult to see the stream on a screen in broad daylight and it can be cumbersome to carry around an extra laptop or tablet. Wave’s 7” touchscreen IPS LCD display is designed for daylight-viewable clarity, allowing users to “see what’s happening on the screen at any time of day, in any brightness,” according to the release. It features 1000nits of brightness for anytime viewing, and a rugged, lightweight chassis for anywhere streaming. Wave is designed to allow users to watch live services in real-time on the same device they’re using for encoding. Designed as an end-of-the-line monitor to see what the audience sees, and make adjustments accordingly.
Users can supply a stream with two sources of portable power for backup in the event of an outage or a tripped chord. Continuous power is available with two hot-swappable L-series batteries. As one battery depletes its charge, Wave will switch its power source to the second battery – allowing users to remove and charge the first battery while maintaining constant power. Batteries are not included. USB-C is available for wired power. Wave can be mounted onto cameras with a ¼”-20 mount or set flat on a table with adjustable leg stands.
Sharelink is Teradek’s cloud platform designed with network bonding for a better internet connection, and multi-destination streaming for broader distribution. Live productions can be sent to an unlimited number of streaming platforms simultaneously.
When an internet connection fails, network bonding lets users go live anywhere with a solid signal. It is designed to protect the live stream by splitting the video bitrate from multiple network connections, including Ethernet, USB modems, and cell phone hotspots. The free Wave app is required on each device to contribute cell phone hotspot data. The Wave app is available for download on the App Store and Google Play. If one connection becomes unreliable, Wave load balances across other connections.
With Sharelink enabled, it is designed to simultaneously broadcast a live stream to Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and more, with an encoder that can go to multiple destinations so users can reach different audiences with minimal configuration effort and distribute a live stream to multiple destinations within a single platform, like Facebook Groups and Facebook Pages, and Youtube Channels and YouTube Events.
The announcement continues, “Say you have youth night on Thursdays, weddings on Saturdays, and services on Sundays. Normally, you’d need to configure each event the day-of – with each event requiring a different setup. This leaves room for error, especially with a volunteer staff who may not do this regularly. Now, planning your events ahead of time has never been easier thanks to Wave’s innovative operating system: FlowOS. Configure your setup ahead of time using Wave’s Smart Event Creator. Got a similar gig coming up? FlowOS saves your preferred presets for future events, so you and your team can go live in just a single tap.”
During the event, users can monitor video while keeping tabs on stream quality and statuses. Designed to be set up beforehand, so users can hand volunteers the device, and hit a single button to go live.
Wave’s on-board recording feature is designed to automate the streaming workflow. Record and store a clip of today's sermon to an SD card, and publish it to a website at a fraction of the file size. Wave is designed to eliminate the need for an external recorder. The system is designed to avoid the time-consuming process of pulling ProRes files that can be storage-heavy and take hours to edit.
If users need to step away from the Wave, they can keep track of a live stream from a smart device with the Wave app and review a stream's stats like bitrate, bonding status, and resolution to ensure a stable stream. The Wave app enables hotspot bonding with multiple cellular devices with a Sharelink subscription and free Wave app. Users can pitch in their phone’s LTE data to boost a signal, giving them another outlet to give back to a church’s live stream.
