One of the most powerful things about our handheld devices is convergence. The device--which used to just be a phone--is now...well...everything. It isn't unusual to see them pop out at breakfast meetings and Bible studies, so I was curious to find out what types of apps are available for spiritual development. And this is what I found...
Youversion Audio. While you may be familiar with the Youversion Bible--which offers a wide variety of translations at your fingertips--did you know that they know offer audio versions of the Bible? It makes it easy to drift off to sleep to scripture or make a long commute productive.
Verseminder. The Navigators--who are the leaders in techniques for scripture memory--now have an iPhone app. Verseminder Topical Memory System is a tool that helps you memorize Scripture and tracks your progress, all at your own pace. They recommend using 10 minutes two times a day.
Monvee. Is a desktop system that is designed to discover what is getting in the way of your spirtiual growth and then craft a plan to address it. Endorsed by Christian leaders such as John Ortberg, Bob Buford and Jud Wilhite, the program is designed to be both comprehensive and personalized.
Bible Lock Screens. This application provides access to Biblically-based lock screens so you can be inspired each time you pick up your handheld device.
The Love Dare. The 40 Dares sends The Love Dare’s daily marriage-strengthening action points directly to your iPhone along with a checklist.
Explore Prayer. This free app contains a lot of different resources including one called Divine Hours designed to connect us to the liturgical Christian practice of fixed-hour prayer. It presents the prayers to be prayed at the divine hours of every day: Morning prayers, for prayer between 6 and 9; midday prayers for praying between 11 and 2; and evening prayers to pray between 5 and 8 to gently close the day.
iDevotional is a daily devotional app by ChristianAudio.com. And if you haven't discovered ChristianAudio yet, it is definitely worth checking out since they have a free audio book available for download almost every month.
Ever get so caught up in your life that hours can go by without bringing your thoughts back to God? The Mindfulness Bell by Spotlight Six Software allows you to set a bell to ring soflty at given intervals throughout the day to remind you to "set your heart on things above."
These are the best of what I found in my research. Which apps are you currently enjoying?
