Last year, one of my favorite reads was a book called Quitter
by Jon Acuff. The book was inspirational and funny with a large dose of "wake up."
One of the tools Acuff mentions in the book is a site called FutureMe.org which allows you to send e-mails to yourself on a delay. I composed an e-mail to myself asking if I'd accomplished certain goals, dated it to send a year from that point, then as I got busy with the rest of my life...quite forgot about it. Until it arrived last weekend.
As it turns out, I was at a reunion of friends from my church youth group. (We connect every year for "BFF Weekend" and act like we are 16 again for about 24 hours.) As you might imagine, hanging out with old friends makes for a little introspection anyway (with the added benefit of perspective in the conversation gained through a lifetime of knowing each other). I checked e-mail on my phone, and found the note from FutureMe.org asking PresentMe (so to speak) a ton of questions. "Did I follow through with what I'd planned to do?" "Was I avidly chasing my dreams the way I intended?" The questions beyond that were very specific, and I was encouraged to be able to answer "yes" to all of them.
There was power in seeing that my dreams are still the same today as they were a year ago. And even more so that I'd moved closer to them.
In terms of "digital world tools" this can be a powerful one. The service is free and I invite you to test drive it for yourself.
