“Our team was actually aware of her story for three years, but it was a very big narrative to take on,” explains Hankins. “We reached out to Lilyanah a year before the video was to play in our Easter services, just to set up a two-hour pre-interview with her to explore the story in depth. From there, our team began structuring it into three parts to fit with the plans for the service.”
She continues, “Tyler Oxendine was the director on the project, and early on we set up multiple meetings to carefully develop the storyboards and lay out the creative process. For instance, part of Lilyanah’s story that we wanted to tell actually takes place in Syria. Luckily, Tyler was confident that he knew places that we could film to get that look we needed.”
One of the most striking elements of Lilyanah’s Story is the meticulous art direction and set designs for the interviews. “Our Easter theme was ‘Beauty from Ashes,’” Hankins recalls, “so our set for part one was a charred wall as a background with dying wheat surrounding her to symbolize death. For the second part we used moss and lighting to represent that new life. On the final section of the story, we utilized a brightly colored chair, flowers, and backdrop to further drive home that symbolism of life.” As an essential aspect of the Easter worship experience, the congregation’s reception of the final project completely exceeded the team’s expectations. “Everyone really loved it,” states Hankins. “It’s the kind of story that you don’t really get to hear that much. Very few of us know people from Syria … hearing her share about the miracles and growth in her life was an amazing experience.”
