With those words, the story of Creation began. Up until that point, the universe had no existence or form and was nothing more than unrealized potential. Here we are, at the start of a new year, and we can see 2020 in the same way. Much of the year remains before us as a blank slate. Our hours are uncommitted, our schedule mostly uncluttered, our to-do list and priorities undefined. It’s a year teeming with limitless possibility, and we have a fresh opportunity to create it as we wish it to be.So how do we make the most of this newfound opportunity?“
Let there be light.
”It’s perhaps one of the greatest commands in the entire Bible. God saw something dark and formless that needed light, life and hope. And He spoke to it, not as He saw it, but as He wanted it to be. If 2020 is to be a different year, and if we are to take advantage of our new beginning, we must speak to the potential of our future without clinging to the past.I must commit to being a change agent and speaking light into areas that are otherwise filled with darkness.Have there been signs of an unhealthy workplace environment or culture? Instead of staying trapped in a cycle of cynicism and negativity, let this be the year that I speak light and life and positivity into the people around me. Have I struggled to embrace a healthy balance of ministry and personal life? Have I neglected important relationships or my own health?

No more. This is the year that I choose to bring light to the darkness of those areas and, through God, help make those things change. Have I had difficulty managing the pressures of not only executing tasks, but also leading and developing a team of people? Let this be the year that I take charge of my schedule and own development and start taking intentional steps to bring the right type of direction to my role. When I speak light and life into my environment, I immediately become an agent of change. I bring a new sense of ownership that says I’m no longer willing to let darkness be my default. I want to make things better, and I’m willing to focus on the potential of what my situation could be instead of letting my future only be defined by what I see (or don’t see) right now. It’s a new year and a new beginning. It’s a clean slate to start over and do things differently. Light helps bring possibility to what was previously formless and void. Light helps us see the next steps to take as we work to build something new and exciting.
Light brings hope and illuminates possibilities
Let there be light in 2020, so that at the end of the year we can step back, examine the work we have done, and say to ourselves, “This is very good.”
