If the weather wasn't enough to make people come to Southern California in January, the product introductions certainly are. While NAMM Shows are often dominated by musical instruments, the annual trek to Anaheim also gives churches their first look at what's new in the pro audio market for churches.
After what seemed like a slow start, attendance-wise, on Thursday, --- possibly caused by some East coast winter weather travel delays --- the opening day, the 2011 Winter NAMM show has proven to once again be worth the trip.
While many of the new product announcements we witnessed will be showing up in the new products section of Church Production Magazine, the Church Production Online Update (our email newsletter) and on churchproduction.com, here is just a brief overview of some of the new pro audio products for churches from this year's Winter NAMM show.
AKG's new drumset Groove Pack offers a six-microphone microphone set with stand mounts, adapters and a rugged metal case for just $399. The Groove Pack includes the popular P2 dynamic kick drum mic, three P4 dynamic snare/tom microphones and two rugged P17 condenser microphone for overheads.
Audio-Technica (A-T) showed several new products including the AT2022X/Y Stereo microphone that a church could deploy as a choir mic or ambient mic for recording sermons. The stylish, dual condenser design offers two unidirectional shock-mounted capsules that can be positioned in either 90-degree or 120-degree operation
A-T also showed an “intelligent” two-bay recharging station for its 2000 Series wireless systems. A built-in safety feature monitors battery cell voltage and automatically turns the unit off if problems are detected. The unit will also automatically shut off if damaged or alkaline (non-rechargable) batteries are installed. A maintenance charge is applied periodically to prevent self-discharge.
The CabGrabber from Audix, considered one of the most innovative solution for miking guitar and bass cabinets without the use of a mic stand, now has a new accessory which gives it even more flexibility. The Audix BOOM-CG is a boom arm that attaches to the CabGrabber or CabGrabber-XL making virtually any miking position possible. The boom arm features a steel adjustable rod that enables the CabGrabber to extend up to an additional 12 inches for a wide variety mic placement options on your guitar or bass cabinet.
