LEDs seem to be everywhere as almost all of the manufacturers are rapidly developing newer source technology and ways to best employ this new technology to its fullest advantage. When CPM asked the manufacturers, they all talked to us about LED fixtures and we found that there are quite a few new products on the market, as well as new technologies when it comes to using light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the light engine in lighting fixtures. LEDs have already moved beyond just RGB with the addition of white and amber LEDs to the mix; the dies are getting smaller and more compact, while at the same time producing more light output.
Research and development divisions for most companies have been designing well beyond just washlights and are now producing Fresnel and ellipsoidal spots that behave much like their tungsten models; not quite replacements, but close with very reduced power consumption. Manufacturers have also been harnessing the best ways to deal with the heat of LEDs, either with fans, better convection cooling, or even brand new methods of dispersing heat, which shortens the life of the LED. We found lots of promising options for consideration to add to house of worship fixture inventories.
Here are 30 different companies with lighting fixtures that have been recently introduced. They are arranged in three categories: manual LED fixtures, automated LED fixtures and LED houselights/worklight fixtures. Manufacturers have come up with interesting tools that meet many different lighting application needs. I would suggest that you speak with your theatrical equipment suppliers and dealers, as well as the manufacturers, to arrange demonstrations of the products that interest you. Try them in your facility and see if they work for the way you light your productions. CPM would love to get feedback on what works for your applications.
