Soundcraft got our attention at the Winter NAMM show earlier this year with the introduction of the new UI series of wireless mixers. We're pleased to be able to bring you never-before-seen photos of the UI series --- specifically the user interface.
There are currently two models, UI12 and UI16 (though we hear rumors of larger versions). The model numbers reference the number of mix channels. While currently limited, this new UI platform appears to be ripe for expansion into larger channel counts similar to the roll out of Mackie's successful DL Series of tablet-based mixers --- initially just eight and sixteen channels, but later 24 and 32 channel versions were introduced. The UI doesn't look like a mixer because you control it with your own wireless device. But unlike other tablet-based mixers, it doesn't run on an app. The UI mixer is really just an I/O device with a computer and built-in router. With nothing to download, you simply connect your tablet, PC, or smartphone via Wifi. So it's compatible with iOS, Android, Windows, Mac OS and Linux. These mixers offer XLR combo inputs, XLR mic inputs, stereo RCA line in and hi-Z/instruments inputs. Built-in digital processing comes from the likes of dbx, Digitech, and Lexicon which includes AFS2 guitar amp modeling.
There is a four-band parametric EQ, high-pass filter, compressor, de-esser, and noise gate on each input channel. You also have a 31-band graphic EQ, noise gate, and compressor on each output as well as a RTA (real-time analyzer) on inputs and outputs. Other familiar digital mixer options like scene recall and a two-channel USB recording/playback round an expansive feature set that make these mixers an incredible value. Price points are $399 for the 12 channel and $549 for the 16 channel. The UI removes a snake from the equation. Put the UI on stage, make your connections, connect your phone, tablet or computer via Wifi and mix. Awesome.
